We are better at treating all sorts of cancers but the overall incidence rate is still going up.
We have better survival rates of strokes and heart attacks but the overall occurrence is still increasing and spreading to ever-younger population sectors!
We can treat Diabetes more effectively, but the disease is exploding.
We are producing more and more supportive footwear and convenient flat urban surfaces, but our feet are getting worse and worse!
How can we go so wrong and not see it!? In simple terms, we are straying further and further from our biocompatible pathway.
Let’s look at our feet:
When our ancestors walked barefoot on uneven natural surfaces, their feet were constantly twisted, turned and challenged. So was the brain, as it had to predict every step in order to maintain balance and minimise impact during locomotion. These days our feet have become neurologically speaking very silent!! They transmit comparatively little noise (proprioceptive stimulation).
The consequence (of this silence) has been manyfold and over time rather dramatic, yet this development has gone mostly unnoticed by the public.
By in large we have simply accepted as normal that an ever-increasing number of people are loosing their natural foot architecture (triple arches) and therefore proper foot function. In fact even many professionals don’t acknowledge anymore that the original foot architecture is supposed to consist of a triple arch, making it comparable to a tripod.
This loss of arches has simply been accepted as a development without major consequences. Firm, supportive footwear with orthotic devices, either generic or custom made, have attempted to realign so-called biomechanical misalignments.
As a consequence, our feet have remained silent (!!) and so the gradual foot deterioration across our western societies has continued and taken on pandemic proportions… and still people aren’t getting it. We are still in a daze of ignorance!!
In simple terms, we are straying further and further from our biocompatible pathway
So what then are the consequences of these silent feet and how can we change this situation?
Various researchers have drawn attention to the significant influence that foot noise has on posture and balance, as well as health in general. It has been demonstrated in Europe and China that people walking on uneven surfaces and with soft footwear (or barefeet), suffer significantly less foot deterioration and balance impairment then urbanites on predominantly flat hard surfaces and in rigid, supportive footwear.
In the field of neurology there is now much interesting information available relating to cortical (brain) understimulation. It seems that our higher brains don’t like to be idle and require a healthy daily dose of physical stimulation (through our bodies AND feet) in order to work properly. Like a government, which needs feedback from its citizens, so does the brain need regular feedback from its body parts in order to arrange affairs properly.
It seems that our higher brains don’t like to be idle and require a healthy daily dose of physical stimulation (through our bodies AND feet) in order to work properly
This begs the question: is supportive footwear the best solution or rather, what do we mean when we talk of supportive footwear?
Does supportive footwear with its primary goal of posture alignment and biomechanical stability really solve our current problem or are we perhaps missing a link here.
Are we just handing out food to the starving or are we teaching them to produce it for themselves? Are we simply supplying a back brace or are we teaching our patients to strengthen and condition their backs for better outcomes in the long run?
Why should this be any different for our feet?
Where then is this missing link? To understand that, we need to look at our nervous system and ask ourselves:
How does the nervous system like to be stimulated?
Like our minds, our brain likes problem solving. It likes novelty experiences… uncertainty followed by certainty. Constant certainty (silent feet) will cause (neurogenic) boredom resulting in (physiological) stress; on the other hand, uncertainty without certainty will freak the brain out, again resulting in (physiological) stress.
The brain loves uncertainty followed by certainty (problem solving)
The secret therefore is uncertainty followed by certainty (problem solving). This is exactly what is happening to bare feet on natural surfaces! Uncertainty during the initial ground contact with soft and/or uneven surfaces followed by certainty once the body weight has pushed through those layers or established the surface angle.
Since our urban environment is a given with flat, hard surfaces and daily footwear, why not develop a sole, which mimics the neurology of natural surfaces? Let us create a footbed, which helps align our feet and posture as well as stimulate our nervous system the way it was meant to be
Introducing equilibras™, the only flat-sole medical device, which does exactly that, by mimicking natural surfaces.
It does it by exposing our feet to uncertainty followed by certainty. The soft, flat upper layer creates uncertainty and deception, the firm, contoured lower layer certainty and support.
Interestingly the effect of this simple sole concept is being repeated over and over again during each and every step, thus mimicking natural uncertainty followed by certainty on an ever-recurrent basis.
We should remind ourselves at this point that we still need to physically condition and work our feet barefoot and on challenging surfaces as much as possible. Let’s not solely rely out of laziness and convenience on tools and equipment, but regularly use our bodies (feet) in an intelligent and logical manner.
The argument however is made for most urbanites to use a neurorthotic (neurological and orthotic) footbed on a daily basis in order to help stimulate your silent feet.
So when you see our fashionable footwear don’t be confused!!
